The incident happened near the end of the third quarter of the Hawks’ big win over Sydney, with Roughead getting pushed behind the goalposts and sliding into the four exposed bolts.
The AFL has launched an investigation into the incident, with AFLPA general manager Ian Prendergast describing it as a “dangerous situation.”
Prendergast said the AFLPA would launch its own investigation.
“It is completely unacceptable from an Occupational Health and Safety perspective to have players exposed to a dangerous situation like that,’’ he said.
“AFL Players already expose themselves to significant risk when they run out to play each week without having issues like this with the stadium.
“It is particularly disappointing given the issues we’ve had with the venue previously, including metal pegs being found on the playing surface during a game and generally substandard playing surface conditions.”
