AFL Team Whispers - Round 3

Sam Mitchell

Hawthorn v Fremantle

The Hawks will be without Luke Hodge, but Sam Mitchell will be named and should play. That is shaping as the only change for the reigning premiers with youngster Angus Litherland set to keep his place in the team after an encouraging debut last week.

The Dockers have lost Nat Fyfe to suspension and Michael Barlow to injury, while doubts surround Michael Johnson after the All Australian defender didn't fly with the squad on Wednesday. Zac Clarke, Garrick Ibbotson, Lachie Neale, Clancee Pearce and Hayden Crozier all did make the flight with all five looking likely to play. Colin Sylvia will have to wait another week before playing his first match for his new club.

Western Bulldogs v Richmond

Last year's number four draft pick Marcus Bontempelli is firming to make his debut with Brendan McCartney likely to make a couple of changes to the side that lost to North Melbourne. Michael Talia should come in bolster the backline, with Lin Jong and Jake Stringer looking the likely omissions.

Brett Deledio is in serious doubt after barely training on Thursday. Reigning club champions Daniel Jackson has played two games in the VFL and is ready to come in with one of Jake King or Nathan Foley to make way if Deledio is fit to play.

Adelaide v Sydney

An injury to Brad Crouch opens the door for his younger brother Matt Crouch to make his debut. Despite starting the season with two straight losses, wholesale changes look unlikely due to injuries. James Podsiadly has struggled and might get dropped in favour of Josh Jenkins, while Rory Laird is another who could come in.

Also winless, the Swans will welcome back Lewis Roberts-Thomson to the side in place of Tom Dericx provided the versatile big man gets through training. Gary Rohan is also facing a fitness test and might be relegated to the substitute vest. Ryan O'Keefe was quiet last week and could be in the gun, with Brandon Jack and Dean Towers both ready to step up if called upon.

Gold Coast v Brisbane

The Suns are coming off a loss against Fremantle in Perth, but it's hard to see Guy McKenna making too many changes. Harley Bennell is still two weeks away, while Karmichael Hunt was a strong performer in the twos, but he might struggle to get into the senior side.

Gun midfielder Tom Rockliff will make a welcome return from suspension, while Ryan Harwood is available for selection after playing in the reserves on the weekend despite originally being ruled out with a shoulder injury. Andrew Raines will also be considered to run with Gary Ablett. Michael Close was quiet for the second week in a row and might be dropped back to the twos.

Collingwood v Geelong

Lachie Keeffe is a certainty to come into the side to replace injured defender Nathan Brown. Ben Sinclair's hamstring injury opens the door for another change with Alex Fasolo and Josh Thomas the two in contention for that spot.

The Cats will wait until the last minute on veteran Corey Enright, although it seems unlikely he will be risked. Jared Rivers will come back into the side for the suspended Taylor Hunt, while Jackson Thurlow and potential debutant Jed Bews are on standby for Enright.

West Coast v St Kilda

The Eagles will make at least one change with Shannon Hurn out for up to six weeks with a knee injury. Sam Butler would be the obvious inclusion, but youngsters Dom Sheed and Adam Carter pressed their claims with strong performances in the WAFL. Mark Hutchings has overcome back troubles and is also in the mix, along with nuggety midfielder Pat McGinnity.

Tom Hickey looks likely to suit up, but if he fails to prove his fitness then Billy Longer is ready to come in. Dylan Roberton and Sam Gilbert face fitness tests and should one of them fail to get up then Jimmy Webster will return. Key defender Josh Bruce is shaping as a likely inclusion to combat West Coast's monster forwards, while Seb Ross played a starring role in the VFL on the weekend.

GWS v Melbourne

The Giants are tracking nicely so don't expect too many to drop out of the side in Thursday's team announcement. Will Hoskin-Elliott and Jed Lamb will be added the squad of 25, while Stephen Gilham is another on the cusp of selection.

Expect the Demons to make plenty of changes for this clash. If Max Gawn proves his fitness then he should come in to replace Jack Fitzpatrick. Colin Garland is fit, but might need a game in the reserves before coming in. The likes of Sam Blease, Michael Evans and Dean Kent will all be in the squad. Jay Kennedy-Harris, Viv Michie and Cam Pedersen are all in the gun.

North Melbourne v Port Adelaide

The Kangaroos will name Jack Ziebell, but don't be surprised to see him be a late withdrawal on Sunday as he struggles to overcome a shoulder complaint. Ben Jacobs and Liam Anthony will be added to the 25-man squad and one of them loom as the likely replacement should Ziebell fail to get up.

The Power will almost certainly go into the match unchanged. Given it's a Sunday clash, expect to see three of Andrew Moore, Aaron Young, Tom Clurey and Cameron O'Shea added to the 25-man squad.

Essendon v Carlton

With Paddy Ryder to miss with an ankle injury, the Bombers might be forced into playing untried rookie Fraser Thurlow. The other option is putting faith in Jake Carlisle and Joe Daniher to shoulder the ruck duties. Jake Melksham has served his two-match suspension and is available, while Jason Winderlich impressed in the VFL and will be added to the 25-man squad. Zac Merrett looks likely to make way.

Defender Andrew Walker returns after a one-week suspension, while Matthew Watson is available after he was a late withdrawal last week. Doubts surround the fitness of Mitch Robinson, but Andrew Carrazzo is available although he might need a week in the VFL. Patrick Cripps is a strong chance to make his debut.
