Tyrell Mayfield, who was selected in the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League team this year, has chosen to further his sporting career with the Sydney Swans academy.

The speedy teenage star maintained his decision to choose AFL does not mean he is ruling out playing league in the future.

"It will be a real challenge but I’m up for it," Mayfield told The Daily Telegraph.

"I wouldn’t say I’m giving rugby league away, I’m keeping my options open and concentrating on AFL and we’ll see what the future brings.

"School is number one for my mum and the Swans Academy is going to support me with that."

The Randwick Boys High School teenager has attracted the interest of the Rabbitohs, Dragons, Sharks and Roosters.

Mayfield joins current Swans players Kieren and Brandon Jack to choose a pathway in AFL over league.
