AFL bikie incident shocks star, day before game

Unfortunately for Collingwood star Dane Swan, the South Australian Police Force made this mistake, and sent quite a shock through the 2011 Brownlow Medallist.

Swan, who last night played his 250th game in a loss against the Power, is never one to take the game, or himself too seriously and was happy to divulge the story to the Channel Seven commentary team following the Port clash.

While in Adelaide, Swan met up with friend and former Swans defender Gerrard Bennett to watch game three of the State of Origin series on Wednesday night.

Upon leaving the team hotel, Swan and Bennett were immediately swarmed by Police, who mistook the pair for bikies.

“I thought, gee, is this a set up?” Swan said on Channel Seven.

“I was going to a mate’s joint to watch the Origin. We did get pulled over.

“We had literally gone three blocks and I was like ‘mate, what have you done to me? What’s going on here?’.

“I thought I was getting stitched for half a second, by The Footy Show or something.

“I didn’t know what was going on.”

Swan, who eventually saw the funny side of the incident, did admit to being quite startled and very confused by the whole episode.

“They (the police) tapped on the window and said ‘get out’, pretty bluntly to me.

“I haven’t been in Adelaide for a while, I thought maybe I’d done something when I last came here and I haven’t remembered,” Swan continued with a guilty conscience.

“They grabbed me out of the car and looked at me a bit funny and said ‘how long have you been (in Adelaide)?’

“I said ‘about two minutes, I came from four blocks up the road’,” Swan continued.

It didn’t take long for the Police to realise that Swan wasn’t the man that they were looking for, with the three-time Collingwood Best and Fairest winner cracking a joke with the cops saying that his tattoos were always getting him into trouble.

When asked in his post-match press conference if he thought the incident had negatively impacted the playing group before the game, Magpies coach Nathan Buckley said he wasn’t even aware it had occurred.

“Well if anything strange is going to happen, it will happen to Swanny… anywhere he goes,” Buckley said.

Although the Magpies went down in a thriller, there’s no doubt that the commotion had little influence on the performance of the generally laid-back Swan.

The Collingwood star was the second-highest possession-getter on the ground, collecting 33 disposals and 11 clearances, however it proved not enough for the Magpies who were desperate for a win following a spate of close losses against top sides in recent weeks.
