However, what is incredibly obvious is that Mr. Abbott is not completely across AFL - in fact, it seems he has absolutely no idea about it.
Abbott phoned into Triple M in Melbourne to speak to the commentary team of James Brayshaw, Garry Lyon, Danny Frawley and Damien Barrett on Saturday night, and joined in with the team’s footy banter - to little effect.
Triple M’s listeners weren’t afraid to lay into the PM either, with the strange radio encounter raising a few eyebrows.
Lyon however, was quick to come to the PM’s defence, despite his obvious and complete lack of AFL knowledge.
“Now listen everyone, pack members, it’s a piss-take,” Lyon said.
“Let’s be honest, he wouldn’t know us if we popped up in his muesli.
“The fact that he bought into the piss-take, whether you like him or not politically, gets ticks.
“For those who say it is self indulgent crap that’s exactly right, that’s what we do.”
