Traded to Collingwood in late 2007 after two inconsistent seasons with Brisbane, Wood's strong tap work and impressive reach saw him initially partner Josh Fraser in the ruck, with this initial season at the Pies seeing him hold his place for eight-straight games before being sent to the VFL. Wood has always struggled for consistent selection as he's often been regarded as the secondary ruckman behind Fraser initially, and then Darren Jolly. But with Jolly injured for a substantial part of last season, Wood stepped into the role and gathered a career-best 40 hitouts against St Kilda in Round 11. But with Jolly returning, Wood headed back to the VFL, although Leigh Brown's retirement may open up more senior opportunities this season.
