Lonergan established himself as a defender in the Cats line up last season, playing a career-high 22 games. He conceded the second-most goals at the club, often give a role on the opposition's best forward, including the likes of Jack Riewoldt and Travis Cloke. He averaged 13 disposals per game and read the play extremely well, averaging more than mark from an opposition kick per game. Lonergan was one of the best spoilers at the club, averaging five per match and ranking second at the club in that statistic.
