Arriving at Sydney in 2008 after 98 games with Adelaide, Mattner has been one of the first players picked each week with his strong tackling and terrific spoiling making him a pivotal cog in the Swans stingy defensive unit. Since arriving at the club, Mattner has missed only one game and was an elite player in the defensive half last year, averaging the most tackles of any defender in the AFL as well as ranking fourth at the club for intercept possessions, with the Swans scoring more points from these than any other player.
