Melbourne midfielder Jack Trengove has become the youngest skipper in VFL/AFL history after the Demons anointed him and Jack Grimes as the club's co-captains for 2012 on Friday.
In a bold move by Melbourne, the inexperienced duo - who have just 69 matches to their collective credit - replaced veteran Brad Green who held the position on his own for just one year and now finds himself out of the leadership group completely.
At 20 years and 154 days old, Trengove surpasses North Melbourne legend David Dench (20 and 221) as the youngest captain of all time.
The move puts Trengove in lofty company with the likes of Haydn Bunton, Michael Voss and Wayne Carey also in the top six of youngest skippers ever.
Trengove, taken at No.2 in the 2009 draft, has played only 37 matches in two seasons while Grimes has managed just 32 in four.
In fact the most amount of matches Grimes has played in one season was 14 (2010) and the promising defender missed Melbourne's final 16 games last season with a stress fracture in his foot.
In all, the pair have only played 19 times together.
Trengove and Grimes are joined in the revamped leadership group by Clint Bartram, Mitch Clark, James Frawley, Colin Garland, Mark Jamar and Nathan Jones.
Green is joined by Aaron Davey, Brent Moloney and Jared Rivers as axed leaders at the club.
