Collingwood premiership player Alan Toovey has signed a new two-year deal with the Magpies just days after a dramatic public breakdown in communication that saw him seemingly destined to continue his career elsewhere.
The contract ensures the 24-year-old will stay with Collingwood until the end of the 2013 season.
But the deal was only finalised after a tense stand-off between player and club in the early part of trade week.
Toovey's manager Jim Marinis took the extraordinary step of shopping the defender around to other clubs via e-mail and claimed another Collingwood player would have to be cut for his client to remain in black and white.
As late as Tuesday, Mirinis told Trade Week Radio: "With negotiations broken down, Collingwood has told us there is no more room in the salary cap to move so we are looking at potential suitors out there if they are interested in Alan Toovey's services."
"The only way this (Toovey staying at Collingwood) can work unfortunately is if Collingwood delist a senior player in order to move in that salary cap."
A mere five days after those ominous words were uttered, an agreement was reached and Toovey was glad the ordeal was finally over.
"I'm happy that this contract situation has been resolved and I thank Collingwood for showing faith in me," Toovey said.
"As a team we have an exciting period ahead of us so to know that I have the opportunity to be part of that is very pleasing, as I love playing for Collingwood and want to experience further success."
Collingwood football manager Geoff Walsh was also happy with the result.
"We are very pleased to have reached a resolution with Alan and his management company SportsMA," Walsh said.
"We appreciate the cooperation of the managers at SportsMA and acknowledge their willingness to affect a deal, and a gain a satisfactory outcome for all parties."
"Alan is an important player at our club and for him to have committed for another two years is terrific for Collingwood."
Since being picked up in the 2006 Rookie Draft by the Magpies, Toovey has played 87 games in five seasons.
Meanwhile, the Brisbane Lions have confirmed they will receive pick 12 in next month's draft from Melbourne in exchange for key forward Mitch Clark.
Clark executed a stunning backflip on Saturday night by committing to the Demons after publicly stating 24 hours earlier that he would join the Dockers.
The deal ensures the Lions, who already had pick eight, currently have two first-round picks in the 2011 AFL Draft.
The Clark trade will be made official on Monday when the appropriate paperwork is lodged with the league.
