Sheeds looks to Swans

Sheeds looks to Swans

02/14/2012 07:08:16 AM

GWS foundation coach Kevin Sheedy admits he is unashamedly borrowing from the Sydney Swans' handbook by naming multiple captains for the club's debut season in the AFL.

Triple premiership-winner Luke Power will combine with youngsters Callan Ward and Phil Davis as the Giants' three co-captains, continuing the trend of spreading responsibility among a leadership group rather than appointing one person to handle the job.

It's a policy former Sydney coach Paul Roos adopted in 2006 and Sheedy had no problem following the Swans' lead despite the growing rivalry between the cross-town clubs.

"Sometimes you look at what somebody has done very well and you should learn from that lesson," Sheedy said at Tuesday's captaincy announcement.

"I think to me they've set up a very strong footy club, the character of the Swans' group, so that's something we had to learn pretty quickly about Sydney."

"When you look at the Swans' decision to have three captains in a city as big as Sydney - six million people - with players like (Brett) Kirk and (Adam) Goodes and Barry Hall, they always had three."

"The constant was Kirk at the time over those years that took them to those grand finals and sometimes you can look at what clubs have done really well and learn from that lesson."

"They've helped set up a very strong footy club - the character of the Swans' group - (and) that's something we had to learn pretty quickly about this city."

"We wanted to pick some pretty strong people to lead our club."

"These guys are very dedicated and that's the type of player and leadership we want."

Thirty-two-year-old former Lion Power, who was lured out of retirement by Sheedy, was a natural pick as leader but Ward and Davis will be on their captaincy L plates.

"I've always had aspirations to be a leader of a football club and I think it's every kid's dream come true to captain a football club," Ward said.

Davis, who has played just 18 senior games in an injury-interrupted spell at Adelaide, added: "It's a huge honour, one I feel extremely proud of. I feel truly privileged and humbled to get this opportunity."

The Giants will meet the Western Bulldogs and Collingwood in the opening round of the NAB Cup at Blacktown on Saturday night.
