Round one compo for Lions

Round one compo for Lions

09/07/2010 05:00:46 AM

The Brisbane Lions will receive a pick at the end of round one as compensation for losing midfielder Michael Rischitelli to the Gold Coast Suns.

Rischitelli became the third uncontracted player to sign with the competition's 17th club after announcing his decision to quit the Lions on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old denied the switch had anything to do with being offered to Carlton 12 months ago as part of a trade deal for Brendan Fevola.

The compensation being offered to Brisbane by the AFL is based on Rischitelli's new contract offer and his future earning and playing capacity.

Last week the Adelaide Crows branded the same compensation of a pick at the end of round one for losing veteran defender Nathan Bock - the first player to announce his defection to the Suns - as "grossly inadequate".

"We believe that if Nathan was available on the open market he would certainly attract much more than one first round draft pick from another club," said Crows football operations manager Phil Harper.

"He was an All Australian two years ago when he also won our club champion award, is only 27 and if he was still on our list right now he would be rated right near the top."

Rischitelli, who made 111 AFL appearances after being acquired by the Lions with pick No.61 in the 2003 national draft, is the favourite to win Brisbane's best and fairest award for 2010.

Under the AFL's list establishment rules, the Suns have the right to select one uncontracted player from each of the current 16 AFL clubs.

The Lions will be able to use their selection for Rischitelli at the end of round one in any one of the next five AFL national drafts.

The club also has the right to on-trade its compensation selection to another club.

If the club on-trades its compensation selection to another club, the selection may be used in that year's AFL national draft or in any other year up to the 2014 national draft.
