Old Pies, new starts

Old Pies, new starts

Former Magpies Leon Davis and Paul Medhurst remain a chance to continue their AFL careers at new clubs after both players were backed by AFL coaches to have an impact in season 2012.

In Medhurst's case, the 29-year-old would be re-starting his career after he retired at the end of 2010 having not been selected in either of the two Grand Finals Collingwood played, while 2011 All Australian defender Davis will be looked at by clubs in Adelaide and Perth after sensationally walking out on Collingwood following the Grand Final loss to Geelong.

Davis, originally from Northam just outside of Perth, either wants to play in Western Australia to be close to his family, or in Adelaide where his wife originates.

Speaking on Adelaide radio on Monday afternoon, Power coach Matthew Primus said he'd chatted with Davis about the 30-year-old joining the struggling club, who will head into the new season having just missed the wooden spoon in 2011.

"We had a chat with Leon early last week, more to see where he is at with his footy and how interested he is continuing to play at AFL level," Primus told FiveAA.

"He certainly came across that he does (want to play)."

"We are well aware he wants to be in Perth or Adelaide … (and) he could fill a very valuable spot down back there without taking the spot off any of the young kids developing in that area."

"He can defend pretty well, having an All-Australian year he had a pretty good year in that regard."

"(But) it was a really a matter of seeing whether he is driven to have a similar year as he did last year."

With Port Adelaide in dire financial straits throughout the last few seasons, Primus said the club could not afford to pay a huge wage bill for Davis, who reportedly quit the Magpies due to an unsatisfactory contract offer.

"We are not going to pay over the odds by any respects," Primus said. "So it depends what he wants."

If the Power cannot afford Davis' wages, then financially strong clubs like Adelaide and West Coast may be of interest to him.

However, the Eagles could be considering another ex-Magpie in Medhurst after coach John Worsfold refused to rule out making a play for the 168-game veteran.

Medhurst has reportedly spent his year away from football travelling in Europe, but has undergone some intense training during that period and will nominate for the National Draft.

The shallow nature of the draft, combined with the impact GWS will have on the available pool of young talent, means Medhurst may be an attractive proposition to some teams.

Worsfold, though, said the Eagles would not give up any of their draft choices on a player who will turn 30 in December, but he did offer the former Fremantle and Collingwood goalsneak a lifeline back into the AFL system.

"We've got two picks in the national draft which we prize pretty heavily for younger players and then we'll have four picks in the rookie draft," said Worsfold on Monday as West Coast started training once again.

"Really, for the rookie draft you don't know what the pool of players is yet until we get through the draft."

"(But) we won't be using one of our draft picks on those (older) types of players."

Medhurst would face a tough battle breaking into the Eagles' forward line as it already includes crumbing players like Mark LeCras and Mark Nicoski, with the recently-upgraded rookie Ashton Hams also playing a role there during 2011.

"We've got a lot of confidence in some of the smaller forwards that we've got on our list," declared Worsfold.

However, Brad Ebert's defection to Port Adelaide may offer Medhurst a chance to come into the side, as Ebert played a good proportion of last season on the half-forward line before walking out on the Eagles to return to his native South Australia.
