Selectors have released an initial 40-man All Australian squad dominated by Collingwood and Geelong players, with 23 potential first-timers including bolters Eddie Betts, Grant Birchall and Brett Deledio.
The reigning premiers and the Cats have six contenders each while fellow top-four sides West Coast (five) and Hawthorn (four) are also well represented along with Carlton (four) and North Melbourne (four).
But Essendon, who are preparing for Sunday's elimination final against Carlton after finishing eighth, will not have a representative along with battlers Brisbane, Melbourne and Port Adelaide.
And among those who can consider themselves unlucky to miss the initial cut are Bryce Gibbs, Jobe Watson, Luke Hodge, Brendon Goddard and Daniel Giansiracusa.
The other players in contention for a maiden jumper are Adelaide's Scott Thompson, Blues Marc Murphy and Heath Scotland, Magpies Travis Cloke, Ben Reid and Dale Thomas, Dockers Nathan Fyfe and Luke McPharlin, Geelong's James Kelly, Hawks Josh Gibson and Sam Mitchell, Kangaroos Todd Goldstein, Drew Petrie, Andrew Swallow and Daniel Wells, St Kilda's Stephen Milne, Eagles Andrew Embley, Josh Kennedy and Matt Priddis and Bulldog Robert Murphy.
Other notable absentees include Saints skipper Nick Riewoldt, his team-mate Leigh Montagna and Richmond's Robin Nahas.
The list of players chasing at least their second All Australian jumper comprises Carlton's Chris Judd, Magpies Leon Davis, Scott Pendlebury and Dane Swan, Cats Corey Enright, Steve Johnson, Matthew Scarlett, Joel Selwood and Harry Taylor, Gold Coast's Gary Ablett, Hawk Lance Franklin, Saints Nick Dal Santo and Sam Fisher, Sydney's Adam Goodes, Eagles Dean Cox and Darren Glass and Bulldog Matthew Boyd.
With the All Australian selection panel made up by Andrew Demetriou (chairman), Adrian Anderson, Kevin Bartlett, Luke Darcy, Danny Frawley, Glen Jakovich, Leigh Matthews and Mark Ricciuto, the final 22-man squad will be named at a dinner in Melbourne on Monday, September 19.
