Gold Coast utility Nathan Krakouer has walked away from the AFL with the Suns agreeing to release him from his contract due to 'personal reasons'.
Krakouer, who left Port Adelaide to join the Suns for their inaugural season, will return to his home in Western Australia to be with his friends and family.
The 23-year-old had been receiving support from the club, his manager and the AFL Players Association in recent times, as well as a range of professionals.
"We have been working with Nathan and supporting him where possible for some time, and while we remained committed to supporting him, Nathan's desire is to step away from football," Ashcroft said.
"While we are disappointed to lose a player of Nathan's ability, the most important thing is Nathan's wellbeing, and that is why we have agreed to release him from his playing contract."
Krakouer told the playing group of his decision on Monday morning and wished them all the best in the future.
"I have had great support from the club and I want to thank my teammates for understanding my decision, it has been a tough period for me and I believe my decision to leave is the right one," he said.
"I really hope the team has a great year and wish them success in the future."
Suns general manager of football operations Marcus Ashcroft said Krakouer believed it was in his best interests to move away from AFL.
Ashcroft also said the club will continue to help the talented footballer in the future.
"We want to see Nathan overcome his issues and therefore the club will continue to assist Nathan when he returns home, ensuring he has the support he needs going forward," he added.
