Kennedy in the clear

Kennedy clear on Sylvia bump

03/15/2010 05:45:06 AM

West Coast forward Josh Kennedy has escaped sanction for his bump on Melbourne Colin Sylvia which left the Demons midfielder with a broken jaw and likely to miss at least the first four weeks of the season.

Kennedy's shepherd on Sylvia from the third quarter of Saturday's NAB Challenge match at Casey Fields was examined by the match review panel but the former Carlton No.4 draft pick, who was traded west as apart of the Chris Judd deal, was found to have acted within the rules.

"Kennedy did not run far to apply the bump, an elbow was not part of the contact and Kennedy did not leave the ground to deliver the bump. Sylvia was not in a vulnerable position and could reasonably expect contact to be made. The contact was therefore deemed to not be unreasonable in the circumstances," the panel found.

The bump drew comparisons to the contact between Collingwood skipper Nick Maxwell and West Coast youngster Patrick McGinnity which saw Maxwell suspended for four matches in last year's NAB Cup, only for the ban to be overturned on appeal.

Melbourne football manager Chris Connolly had urged the match review panel to act on the Sylvia incident, saying a player had been seriously injured.

Brisbane recruit Amon Buchanan is free to make his debut for the Lions in Round 1 after his report for front-on contact against Hawthorn's Xavier Ellis in their NAB Challenge match at Southport was thrown out.

Carlton's Aaron Joseph has been charged for striking Adelaide's Jared Petrenko in Friday's match at Visy Park and can accept a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record with an early plea.

Should Joseph contest, he risks being banned for the Blues' opening round clash against Richmond at the MCG.

There was only one report from Saturdays NAB Cup final, with Bulldogs veteran Nathan Eagleton, charged with an attempting to trip former team-mate Farren Ray during the third quarter

He can accept a reprimand and 72 points towards his future record with an early plea, but if he contests and fails then he will still be eligible for the Bulldog's Round 1 clash with Collingwood if he recovers from injury in time.

In a bad night for Eagleton, the midfielder also sustained a grade one hamstring strain that may put his appearance in the club's season opener in doubt anyway.

But there was some good news for the Dogs as scans cleared Callan Ward of any damage to his groin.
