Injury blow for Bombers

Injury blow for Bombers

02/09/2012 06:51:59 AM

Injury-cursed Bomber Scott Gumbleton has been placed on Essendon's long-term injury list along with midfielder Brent Prismall.

Hailed as a potential marquee player for the club when he was selected at No.2 overall behind Bryce Gibbs at the 2006 AFL national draft, the hapless Gumbleton was has managed just 22 senior appearances in his five seasons at Windy Hill.

The 22-year-old key position prospect underwent back surgery last November to address a chronic lower-back problem, but he's also had serious issues with his knees and hamstrings.

Prismall is on the comeback after rupturing an anterior cruciate ligament against Collingwood in Round 19 last year and unlikely to be available until later in the season in any case.

Shifting the pair to the long-term injury list gives the club the option of promoting two rookies to the senior list.

I realise this will look harsh, but why is such an injury-prone 'player' still on the list? Surely there must be others with his ht & wt who can actually get on to, and stay on, the field? EFC seems to specialise in these sorts of duds.
