The path to redemption of one-time troubled Essendon utility Michael Hurley has continued with the talented 21-year-old elected to the Bombers' leadership group for 2012.
Hurley was suspended by the club in early 2010 after being charged with assault after an altercation over a taxi fare.
But having enhanced his reputation both on and off the field in the past two seasons, Hurley has now been elected as one of the five players to support captain Jobe Watson.
Along with established leaders, Mark McVeigh, Brent Stanton and Heath Hocking, speedy midfielder David Zaharakis has also been elevated to leader status.
"The new look leadership group has a great mix of both experience and youth and we think it will have a positive effect on the playing list," coach James Hird said.
"It is particularly encouraging to see two of our younger players voted in to the leadership group by their peers."
"Michael and David's elevation into the leadership group is a reflection of the hard work and commitment they show both on and off the field."
Hurley , the No.5 draft pick from 2008, has played 47 games, while Zaharakis, the reigning best and fairest winner, has played 53 games.
