Hawks v Magpies snippets

TURNING POINT: There's a case to argue that Hawthorn's six-goal run between the two-and-15 minute marks of the final term did the trick but, in reality, the Hawks had the points in the bag much earlier, when they landed the first three goals of the third quarter - to Young, Roughead and Franklin - that opened up a 39 point break.

STAR MAN: According to Mick Malthouse, three players - Scott Burns, Scott Pendlebury and Shane O'Bree - spent time on Sam Mitchell. It didn't stop the Hawthorn skipper from racking up 39 disposals and 17 clearances. Mitchell did pretty much as he pleased all afternoon.

ABSOLUTE SHOCKER: Travis Cloke. Paul Medhurst. Alan Didak. Dale Thomas. Anonymous. Ineffectual. Peripheral. Substandard. No presence. No pressure. No influence. No good.

WHAT A GOAL! Hemmed in on the boundary line at the city end, Luke Hodge was at full tilt steaming towards goal late in the first term, but not able to swing onto his left peg. A posse of Pies defenders probably felt they were safe to let him have a ping from just inside 50 with his right, and that's what Hodge did, putting the ball through the middle with his non-preferred.

UNSUNG HERO: Hawthorn fans love Stuart Dew, and there's a lot to love. When the Hawks ran onto the ground, supporters thought the club had a cuddly new mascot or perhaps Michelin was a new sponsor until it was confirmed that Dew had replaced Chance Bateman in the starting line-up. Dew is the only player at Hawthorn whose vertical stripes are horizontally challenged.
