Hawks v Kangaroos - snippets

TURNING POINT: Hawthorn president Jeff Kennett used his pre-match address to question whether North Melbourne had done the right thing by naming Nathan Thompson just 10 days after knee surgery. Kangaroos coach Dean Laidley used his post-match media conference to advise Kennett that he should mind his own business. Thompson finished the match in one piece and on the winning side.

CLASSIC GRAB: Parked under a high, wide shot at goal from Lance Franklin midway through the third quarter, Jarryd Roughead kept Josh Gibson at bay with his left hand and hauled the ball in with his right for a super one-hander. Roughead converted from the angle for his team's first goal for the term.

STAR MAN: Daniel Harris racked up not just a team-high but a career-high 32 disposals in a best-afield performance in the guts on Saturday. In-and-under all day, his eight clearances were as valuable as they were hard-won.

ABSOLUTE SHOCKER: Running towards the boundary line deep in defence with an opponent up his clacker early in the second term, Campbell Brown gathered and handpassed blindly over his head straight to a grateful unmarked Brent Harvey who had a clear path to goal and slammed it straight through.

WHAT A GOAL! Lance Franklin only managed one goal for the day, but it was a beauty. Trapped wide in the left forward pocket at the city end early in the second quarter, Franklin launched a grubber at the unguarded goal from 30 metres and it skidded through.

UNSUNG HERO: In just his fourth game in his second season at the club, defender Gavin Urquhart made virtually every one of his 18 disposals count. Poised, polished and hard-at-it, the 20-year-old would seem to have a fine career ahead of him. Dean Laidley singled out the former Queenslander for special mention after the match. One to watch.
