Brent Harvey will sit down with coach Brad Scott a couple of times before the pair decides whether he retains the North Melbourne captaincy next season.
After Scott said on Thursday that an announcement probably won't be made until January, Harvey backed that call on Saturday when he spoke during the club's Christmas family day on Saturday at Arden St.
"We've had a couple of chats (Brad and I)," Harvey said.
"We've probably just got to figure out what's best for our football club going forward, and when I say that, not just for next year, I'm talking '13, '14 and '15."
"If it's going to good for me to be here while there's another captain coming through and I can help him out, (I'll do) whatever is best for the football club."
"And I'm honest when I say that, whatever is best for the football club for '12, '13, '14, '15 and beyond, is what we're going to do and it's probably this time next month I'll sit down with Brad and have a real good chat about it."
While Harvey will have a big say in the final decision, he did concede it will be Scott who makes the call.
"No we'll sit down, I think we'll work it out together," Harvey added.
"Brad's got the final say obviously, but there's a whole lot more factors that come into it."
Harvey also reiterated what he's said several times previously, that the Kangaroos boast a number of players who could take over from him, leaving him to play a more mentoring role much as Adam Simpson and Anthony Stevens did before him in relinquishing the captaincy but playing on.
"Drew Petrie is the vice captain at the moment so he could easily step in," Harvey said when asked who might take over should there be a change.
"Andrew Swallow springs to mind (along with) Jack Ziebell, Nathan Grima (and) Scotty Thompson."
"We're pretty lucky, we've got six or seven guys that could come in and do the job straight away so there's certainly no concerns in that area."
As far as Scott was concerned, little would change even if Harvey is not captain, with plenty of speculation that Swallow will be given the job.
"No the leadership has not been decided but Boomer (Harvey) does an outstanding job and he'll be a leader of this club next year in whatever form, we're not sure yet," Scott said on Thursday.
"And as Boomer has said publicly a number of times, the fortunate position that we're in is that we've got a number of guys that have really elevated themselves into leadership-type roles."
