Crows v Eagles, snippets
TURNING POINT: West Coast lifted its game in the second quarter and had plenty of the ball in its forward 50 metres during the opening 10 minutes. But the Eagles scored just one goal in that period. They then watched the deficit balloon from 19 points to 37 points in the space of 12 minutes as the Crows headed into the break full of momentum.
CLASSIC GRAB: The Crows had a comfortable lead during the third quarter but the home side's desperation didn't wane. Nathan Bassett took a courageous, contested chest mark on the half back line, frustrating the Eagles further.
STAR MAN: Simon Goodwin is normally noted for his midfield prowess but was the Crows' best forward against West Coast. He led strongly, kicked a career-best seven goals, had 24 possessions, and took 13 marks. His presence in the forward added a dangerous dimension to the Crows' forward line.
ABSOLUTE SHOCKER: A normally composed Shannon Hurn was left looking red-faced after tripping over his own feet in the second term. Hurn had a chance to clear the ball from the Eagles' defence but his stumble allowed the Crows to bottle up the ball at half forward. It wasn't a great day for the South Australian who was one of several players who was beaten by Goodwin.
WHAT A GOAL! Jason Porplyzia gave his side a 48-point lead with his second goal scored at the 16 minute mark of the third quarter. Porplyzia worked his opponent under the ball in the midfield, took two bounces and then kicked truly from 45 metres.
UNSUNG HERO: Michael Doughty was praised by his coach Neil Craig for his defensive game on Daniel Kerr. Kerr picked up 24 possessions but very few were collected in the Eagles forward 50 metres.
