Trent Cotchin's prospects of succeeding Chris Newman as captain of the Richmond Football Club have firmed with the 21-year-old's appointment as vice-captain.
The Tigers have announced that Newman will continue as club captain for the 2012 season with Cotchin his deputy.
A veteran of 192 league games mainly across half-back, Newman has been captain since 2009.
Cotchin, the club's reigning best and fairest, filled in for the injured Newman as skipper in the Tigers' final five games of 2011.
The smooth-moving midfielder has played 64 AFL games since making his debut with Richmond in 2008.
Cotchin has leapfrogged a number of more experienced teammates on the leadership pecking order including Brett Deledio, Nathan Foley and Daniel Jackson.
The Tigers' announcement was made at their U.S. pre-season training camp in Phoenix, Arizona.
