Brisbane v St Kilda snippets
TURNING POINT: The Saints were only down by nine points eight minutes into the second quarter but the Brisbane Lions slammed on the next nine goals in a row from the 11-minute mark of the same term to the nine-minute mark of the third to end the contest.
STAR MAN: Simon Black. The man is a magician. He showed exactly why he won the Brownlow Medal in 2002 with a talismanic 28-possession, five-tackle, eight-inside 50 performance.
CLASSIC GRAB: Lions star Jared Brennan leapt high above a pack which had converged on Brisbane’s goal line at the 11-minute mark of the second quarter and managed to hold on to the pill long enough to be rewarded with the mark of the day. The enigmatic youngster capped off the play by slotting through the easiest of goals from the goal square.
WHAT A GOAL! We didn't have to wait to long to see the goal of the match as Brisbane livewire Rhan Hooper roved a marking contest beautifully and snagged a ripper on the run from 40m out after just two minutes had expired in the contest.
ABSOLUTE SHOCKER: Earlier in the day, the home fans could have been forgiven for thinking the eventual goal feast they were treated to wasn't going to eventuate. After Brisbane's score was 3.0 (18) after 15 minutes, it lost its goal sense very quickly thereafter as it went on to kick seven behinds in a row. However, Mitch Clark ended the rot with a goal at the four-minute mark of the second term and the Lions ended up registering 21 majors.
UNSUNG HERO: He may have only had nine disposals for the day but Brisbane ruckman Jamie Charman slapped the ball out on 26 occasions and, crucially, provided his midfield with first use of the ball from stoppages more often than not.
