Hawthorn has delivered rookie Richmond coach Damien Hardwick a brutal initiation with a 73-point demolition of the Tigers in the NAB Cup clash at Aurora Stadium on Saturday night.
A highly-skilled and clinical Hawks led by 102 points at three-quarter time before easing off the pressure, eventually winning 3.16.12 (135) to 0.9.8 (62).
Captain Sam Mitchell collected 38 possessions, Luke Hodge was busy with 26 touches while Lance Franklin bagged five goals.
Richmond didn't have any outstanding performers although Jack Riewoldt kicked three goals and Brett Deledio had 22 disposals. The team's 36-7 final term was also admirable.
Hawthorn's next opponent will be the winner of the clash between the Western Bulldogs and the Brisbane Lions.
It was a nightmare evening for Hardwick, a former Hawks assistant coach, who not only lost the game but lost two players to injury - first-year player Ben Nason went down in the second term with a seemingly serious knee injury while Adam Thomson copped a knee to the head in a sickening marking contest with Jordan Lisle.
The game was all but decided in the first quarter with the Hawks flying out of the blocks.
Franklin kicked three goals for the term (including a pair in the opening six minutes) while good pressure in the forward 50 saw Hodge and Xavier Ellis add their names to the scoreboard too.
A shell-shocked Richmond collected only 61 possessions, compared with Hawthorn's 104, with David Astbury's snap shot its lone highlight.
In contrast the Hawks had winners everywhere resulting in a 38-point advantage at the first change.
The procession continued in the second term with the Hawks keeping the foot on the pedal.
They collected two super goals through Luke Breust and Lisle while Franklin and Jarryd Roughead were an ever-present danger.
A Riewoldt major mid-term brought brief relief for the Tigers but his side was in deep trouble with the scoring reading 85-13 at half-time.
Hawthorn extended its lead with a six-goal-to-two third quarter.
Franklin kicked his fifth major while a brilliant nine-pointer from Roughead from near the boundary was a highlight.
Despite being rattled by Thomson's knockout, Richmond persevered with a late major to Graham Polak lifting spirits.
But the scoreboard was looking ugly as the Hawks went into the final change with a 102-point advantage.
Riewoldt kicked the opening two majors of the fourth term and for once the Tigers were on the front foot.
They continued to run hard and finished the contest with more intensity than the Hawks.
