Redbacks assume lead

Redbacks assume lead

02/09/2010 10:15:03 AM

South Australia has claimed first-innings points against Western Australia on day two of their Sheffield Shield match at the WACA Ground.

The Redbacks are 5-309 at stumps with a lead of 25 and in a strong position on the back of a second-wicket 151-run stand between James Smith and Michael Klinger.

Aaron O'Brien (46 not out) and Dan Christian (27 not out) are now at the crease and have combined for 71 and will look to build on the visitors' lead to start the third day.

Smith and Klinger were at the crease when the day started with the Redbacks on 1-19 in reply to the Warriors' first-innings total of 284 after South Australian skipper Daniel Harris won the toss and elected to bowl.

South Australia suffered a setback in just the second over of the innings as it tried to survive the 45 minutes to stumps on day one when stand-in captain Harris was clean bowled without scoring from a superb ball from Michael Hogan, but Klinger and Smith found it easier, albeit slow going.

Smith, 21, hit 10 boundaries as he faced 227 balls for his 78.

Klinger continued his superb form that had already seen him score two Shield centuries this season hitting 12 boundaries for his 74, but he also found it a little slow facing 189 deliveries.

He is now averaging 104 this season to be one of the best batsmen in the country once again.

He was out when he tried to play a cut shot off Brad Knowles that was too close to him and he played it on, while Smith miscued a pull shot and hit it straight to Hogan at mid-on off Knowles as well.

Tom Cooper and Cameron Borgas were then looking quite good either side of tea before Cooper suffered a lapse in concentration to be caught at slip by Marcus North off the left-arm spin of Adam Voges for 26.

Borgas had been the most aggressive of the Redbacks batsmen hitting three boundaries and a six in his 39 before he left a ball from Hogan and was clean bowled to make SA 5-238.

But O'Brien and Christian safely guided South Australia to stumps.

O'Brien has five fours and a six in his 46 from 87 balls, while Christian backed up his good bowling performance on day one with 27, including four boundaries.

WA's quick bowlers Hogan, Steve Magoffin, Ashley Noffke and Knowles toiled hard for little reward in the 30-plus degree conditions.

Knowles finished the day with 2-78 and Hogan 2-66 to be the only wicket-takers along with Voges.

Harris' decision to send the Warriors in to bat on the first day is increasingly looking like being a good move.

WA batsmen Voges (54), Liam Davis (44), Magoffin (42), Luke Ronchi (41), Wes Robinson (36) and North (29) all made solid starts, but couldn't go on with it keeping the score to what could be a below-par total.

The Redbacks' bowlers worked hard with Christian leading the way taking 4-63.

Jake Haberfield also bowled well for 3-64 and debutant left-armer Gary Putland chipped in with 2-68.
